⛰️ 8-Day Adventure Tour into the Heart of the Surinamese Rainforest

Day 1 – The Journey Begins

Our adventure starts early at 7:00 AM with departure from Paramaribo by bus. We cross the Wijdenbosch Bridge, offering beautiful views over the Suriname River, and continue through Commewijne, where we make a short restroom stop.

As we travel eastward, the scenery gradually changes from lively city streets to the calm, green interior of Suriname. After approximately two hours, we arrive in Albina.

Here, we switch from road to river and board a boat to cross to Saint-Laurent du Maroni, a charming border town on the French side. A French bus awaits us for a scenic drive through quiet countryside toward Apatou.

Into the Rainforest

In Apatou, we board a boat once more for the final stretch of the journey — a peaceful river cruise deep into the rainforest toward Camp Wadaa.

Day 2 – Exploring the Marowijne & Tapanahony Rivers

 

We then navigate several impressive rapids on our way to Stoelmanseiland on the Lawa River, where you will learn more about the rich history and traditions of the old Maroon culture.

The day ends in Tjon Tjon, an Aukan village situated along the Tapanahony River. Overnight stay in a simple yet comfortable hammock camp.

Day 3 – Jungle Hikes & Waterfalls

Vanuit Tjon Tjon beginnen we aan een uitdagende maar lonende jungletocht  richting het  Lely gebergte ,waar een prachtige verborgen waterval op ons wacht, afgesloten door dure jungle en kristalhelder water, de perfecte plek voor een verfrissende duik en een moment om volledig tot roest te komen in de natuur.
 

Vervolgens bezoeken we de indrukwekkende Granholo-watervallen . Na de lunch in Tjon Tjon maken we een wandeling door het dorp Carmel , waar we meer weten te komen over het lokale leven en de tradities. Diner en overnachting in hangmatten.

Day 4 – The Heart of the Aukan People

Na het ontbijt vervolgen we onze reis naar de Granholo-watervallen . Sommige stroomversnellingen zijn te wild voor boten, dus steken we over via Futupasi , waar de bagage per kar wordt vervoerd.

Aan de andere kant reizen we verder naar Drietabbetje , de woonplaats van de Granman (opperhoofd) van het Aukan-volk. Na de lunch vervolgen we onze reis naar Sunakamp , ​​​​een prachtig bewoond eiland door een Marron-familie. Tijd om te ontspannen, te vissen of gewoon van de natuur te genieten. Overnachten in hangmatten.

Day 5 – Rapids & Traditional Villages

Today is the most adventurous day of the expedition. From Sunakamp, we navigate powerful rapids and pull the boat over sula’s — an unforgettable experience!

We stop in Granbori, a traditional Maroon village, where we present a symbolic gift to the village captain. Next, we visit Tutu Kampoe, one of the earliest Indigenous villages, largely self-sufficient.

We then pass Punsula, the largest rapid on the route, before reaching Apetina, a protected nature area where you’ll experience daily Indigenous life. Overnight in hammocks in an authentic stilted hut.

Day 6 – Climbing Tebu Top

After breakfast, we hike to the foot of the sacred Tebu Top. The climb to the 374-meter summit takes about 2.5 hours and rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of the rainforest.

For guests who prefer not to climb, an alternative program is available. Afterward, we travel to Granda Futu to relax in the river, then return to Apetina for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7 – Culture & Farewell

After breakfast, enjoy a final walk through Apetina and shop for local souvenirs.

On the return journey to Drietabbetje, we once again navigate several rapids. Upon arrival, we tour the village of the Granman and, if present, meet the paramount chief himself. Overnight in hammocks with stunning river views.

Day 8 – Return to Paramaribo

After breakfast, we wait for the small aircraft that flies us back to Zorg en Hoop Airport, Paramaribo, bringing this unforgettable journey of adventure, culture, and nature to a close.

Day 3 – Jungle Hikes & Waterfalls​

Day 4 – The Heart of the Aukan People​
