5-Day Adventure into the Heart of Suriname’s Jungle

Day 1 – Journey to the West of French Guiana

Our adventure begins early at 7:00 AM with departure from Paramaribo by bus. We cross the Wijdenbosch Bridge, enjoying stunning views over the Suriname River, before continuing through Commewijne, including a short restroom stop.

As we travel eastward, the scenery gradually transforms from lively city streets to the peaceful, lush greenery of Suriname’s interior. After approximately two hours, we arrive in Albina, where a guided tour introduces us to the town’s culture and history.

Following the tour, we board a boat to cross the Marowijne River to Saint-Laurent du Maroni, a charming French border town. A French bus awaits us there for a scenic drive through quiet countryside toward Apatou, our first stop for the journey.

Day 2 – Culture, Nature & Traditions

After breakfast, we visit the local school to gain insight into the community’s daily life and how education is organized. This visit offers a meaningful glimpse into village life and its strong sense of community.

Next, we take a short boat ride to begin our guided forest walk. Here, you’ll learn about medicinal plants and traditional kostgrondjes (small agricultural plots) that sustain the community. Your guide will explain how these natural resources are used for food, medicine, and daily life.

After the forest experience, we enjoy a riverside lunch before traveling by boat to Lokaloka village, where we greet the community and experience more of their rich culture. Returning to our campsite, the day concludes with a traditional storytelling evening, where local tales and oral traditions come alive around the fire.

Day 3 – Boat Journey to Tjong Tjong & Cultural Discovery

After breakfast, we set off on a scenic boat journey toward Tjong Tjong, making two memorable stops along the way.

Our first stop is at the local boat builders, where we witness traditional corjalen (wooden canoes) being carefully crafted. It’s a unique insight into the community’s craftsmanship and the vital role of these boats in daily life.

Before our second stop, we navigate three significant and occasionally challenging river Rapids—Man Bari, Singa-Tete, and Poli-Gudu- taking in the natural beauty and observing how the local communities rely on the waterways.

At our second stop, Stoelmann’s Island, we enjoy a village walk, immersing ourselves in the local culture. Your guide will also share stories about the interior war of 1986, giving you a deeper understanding of the region’s history and resilience.

Finally, we continue by boat to Tjong Tjong, our overnight destination, reflecting on the day’s river journey and cultural encounters.

Day 4 –Waterfall Adventure & Jungle Survival

After breakfast, we set out on an invigorating hike through the forest toward a breathtaking waterfall. Along the way, your guide teaches essential jungle survival skills, offering insight into how the local community thrives in harmony with nature.

At the waterfall, take your time to relax, swim in the natural pool beneath the falls, and enjoy the soothing sounds of cascading water. It’s a perfect moment to connect with the forest and unwind in this hidden paradise.

After the hike back to our campsite, a warm lunch awaits. Later, we travel to Camp Wadaa, where, following dinner, the day concludes with a cultural evening filled with music, stories, and traditions that bring the local heritage to life.

Day 5 – Farewell & Return to the City

After breakfast, we board the boat for a visit to Lange Tabbetje, where we meet the village chief, the Ganman, and learn about village leadership, traditions, and community life.

We then continue to Albina, transitioning from river to land. From there, we board the bus for the final leg of our journey back to the city.

As we travel, take a moment to reflect on the unforgettable experiences of the past days, the rivers navigated, villages visited, and the vibrant cultures and traditions you’ve encountered. This marks the conclusion of our tour, leaving you with lasting memories of an extraordinary adventure.
